Expert in Balinese Mask Performance Carmencita has been exploring the life of the mask through dancing tradition for over 20 years. She has a Master’s degree in Performing Arts from the University of Bologna-Italy and an Advanced Master’s degree in Cultural Studies from Leiden University-Netherlands.
Her PhD in Asian Studies - Balinese Performance is from the University of Tasmania. The thesis is on the embodiment of the Balinese mask, its cosmological implications and its cultural context.

Carmencita has been teaching and performing in Europe, Indonesia and Australia, and currently in Australia she OFFERS:

-Rejang: Feminine traditional Balinese Dance.

-Baris: Masculine traditional Balinese Dance.

-Mask embodiment: exploring polarities and unity through Balinese and Italian mask traditions

-Traditional Balinese masked dance choreography: the Prime Minister, the Old Man, the Prince.

-Introduction to Javanese gamelan music: University of Tasmania-Launceston

-Introduction to Asian Performance:
Lectures series between theory and practice.

-Italian language.

-Indonesian language.

WORKSHOP ON THE USE OF THE MASK BASED ON BALINESE TOPENG AND ITALIAN COMMEDIA DELL’ARTE TECNIQUE

How to make a mask alive? The body has to become one with the mask, has to become the mask! How does it happen?
Based on Balinese Topeng masked dance-drama and Italian Commedia dell’Arte techniques (Italian masked theatre), this introductory workshop aims to give insights into the transformative nature of the body-mind in order to become a true character. In the beginning, the exploration of the Balinese dance techniques allow us to connect with the source of movement for purpose which is pure breath; then you can search for new body shapes and characters through using the improvisation techniques of Commedia dell’ Arte.
